The gender pay gap in unadjusted form is given as the difference between average gross hourly earnings of male paid employees and of female paid employees as a percentage of average gross hourly earnings of male paid employees. For the years 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 the GPG is calculated on base of the results from the four-yearly Structure of Earnings Survey (SES). For the years in which Structure of Earnings Survey is not conducted the GPG is calculated using SES data as benchmark and the variation rate of the average annual gross earnings by gender from the annual survey on Number of employees, wages and salaries and other labour costs.

The data are available broken down by economic activities.

Classification of Economic Activities (CEA-2008, for international use NACE.BG 2008)

The (unadjusted) Gender Pay Gap (GPG) is provided for employees working in enterprises with 10+ employees and belonging to all economic activities except "Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing" according to NACE.BG 2008.

The indicator has been defined as unadjusted (i.e. not adjusted according to individual characteristics of employees that may explain part of the earnings difference - age, length of service, full-time/part-time employment, education, occupation etc.) because it should give an overall picture of gender inequalities in terms of pay.

The GPG figures for 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 are directly computed from the 4-yearly Structure of Earnings Survey, for the intermediate years the indicator is estimated using the variation rate of the average annual gross earnings by gender.

· Local units, belonging to enterprises with 10 or more employees.

· Employees - all employees, there are no restrictions for age and hours worked;

· Size of enterprises: 10 employees or more;

· Economic activity - all economic activities except "Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing" according to NACE.BG 2008.

According to Article 2, point 3 from the Law on Statistics the statistical information shall be produced in compliance with the following criteria for quality: adequacy, accuracy, timeliness, punctuality, accessibility and clarity, comparability and logical consistency.

According to Article 10 from Council Regulation (EC) No 530/1999 of 9 March 1999 concerning structural statistics on earnings and on labour costs the national authorities shall ensure that the results reflect the true situation of the total population of units with a sufficient degree of representativity.

The main users are Eurostat, Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, trade unions and other non-government organizations.

The punctuality of data publication depends from the availability of the final results for the average gross annual wages and salaries by gender.

The definitions are following the one from the Structure of Earnings Survey.

The comparability over time is disturbed by the changes of the Classification of Economic Activities.

All indicators are internal coherent.

Data on average wages and salaries broken down by gender are published as well. The main difference between GPG and average wages are due to the following reasons:

· Average wages and salaries are per employee, while GPG is per hour;

· Average wegaes and salaries cover enterprises from all economic activities and size classes, while GPG is restricted to local units belonging to enterprises with 10 or more employees from all economic activities except "Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing" according to NACE.BG 2008.
