Since July 2022, President of NSI has been Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD. He is born on February 26, 1977 in Gotse Delchev town. He has a Master's degree in Economics, majored in ‘Statistics and Econometrics’ at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE), Sofia. He was the top of his class, a straight-A student. In 2015 he got his PhD in Economics, majoring in ‘Statistics and Demographics’ at the Economic Research Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (ERI - BAS). Topic of the PhD dissertation: ‘Econometric methods for seasonal adjustment of statistical time series’.

He has been Associate Professor at the ‘Statistics and Econometrics’ Department at UNWE since November 2018. He is a lecturer on the following disciplines: ‘MSL, Machine (Self) Learning’, ‘Statistical Information Systems’, ‘Statistical Analysis of Time Series’ and on other specialized disciplines in the field of statistics and econometrics.

In the period December 2012 - June 2022 he was managing partner at Econometrica Ltd.  From January 2006 to June 2022 he was managing partner at MicroStat Analytics Ltd, where, in addition to his management experience, he had participated and was project manager of more than 130 projects in the field of statistics. He had consulted numerous international and national institutions, including the World Bank, the Administration of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economy, the National Social Security Institute, the Bulgarian National Audit Office, he had also consulted banks and other institutions.

He is the author of more than 60 scientific publications in the field of statistics, including 17 textbooks and monographs, 16 articles in scientific journals and 27 reports at scientific conferences.

As President of NSI, he represents the national statistical system in the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC), the United Nations Statistical Commission, in the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), in the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy (CSSP) at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Since 2023, he has been Member of the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (HLG - PCCB), UN Statistics Division, as one of the five representatives for the North America and Europe region.

He is Member of the Econometric Society (ES) and Member of the European Network for Business and Industrial Statistics (ENBIS). Institutional member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS).
