Project ‘Improvement and development of European business statistics’

Project ‘Improvement and development of European business statistics’

In January 2026 the National Statistical Institute launched a project entitled ‘Improvement and development of European business statistics’, Work Аrea 1: ‘Data transmission for new STS commercial real estate indicators (STS CREIs)’ and Work Аrea 3: ‘Developing methodologies to backcast the industrial statistics time series data by a NACE rev. 2.1 PRODCOM List based classification’, implemented under Grant Agreement with the European Commission No 101260171-2025-BG-EBS.

Project Work Area 1 is based on the implementation of a new EC Regulation for commercial real estate indicators and covers the following activities:

  • Research and analysis of the available data sources for construction starts and finished construction in accordance with the methodological and legal requirements for quality (timeliness, coverage, etc.);
  • Elaboration and pilot testing of a toolkit for collecting, processing and validating the data;
  • Compilation and submission of reference metadata as well as transmission of pilot data to Eurostat regarding the introduction of the new commercial real estate indicators. The aim is to ensure transparency, comparability and methodological clarity as well as enhance their harmonization on EU level.

Work Area 3 aims to develop data-backcasting calculation methods for already collected data for dynamic series of industrial production by NACE rev. 2.1 PRODCOM List-based classification.

Within the framework of the project, the already collected industrial production time series data will be recalculated and the available time series will be reviewed to ensure comparability of data over time and to continue providing long time series to users of production statistics. To this end, the following objectives are going to be achieved:

  • Develop methodology for data-backcasting by using the micro-approach production method;
  • Develop and test an electronic technical tool to transpose the PRODCOM data from the reference year 2025 back to 2021;
  • Production and transmission to Eurostat of backcasted industrial production statistical time series for the period from 2025 back to 2021.

The project is set to continue 19 months and is expected to be finalized in July 2027.

The project realisation will contribute to the improvement of the quality and comparability of the data provided by national statistical offices on European level.
