Activity of Non-Financial Enterprises - 2024 - preliminary data

1. Overview

Annual reports on their activity for 2024 were submitted at the National Statistical Institute (NSI) by 470 985 non-financial enterprises, which was 1.8% more compared to 2023. The number of persons employed¹ in full-time equivalent in the non-financial enterprises was 2 234 035, or 0.6% more than the previous year.

The largest was the share of non-financial enterprises in the service and trade sector (76.4%), which formed 63.7% of all employed persons (Fig. 1). The ‘Agriculture, forestry and fishing’, ‘Industry’ and ‘Construction’ sectors formed 23.6% of all enterprises, and those employed in them were 36.3% of all employed persons in the non-financial sector.

The non-financial enterprises include all sections by NACE Rev. 2 with the exception of ‘Financial and insurance activities’, ‘Public administration and defence, compulsory social security’, ‘Activities of membership organisations’ and ‘Activities of households’.

It does not include those absent for an unlimited time, as well as those provided under contract by other companies.

The value of output at current prices amounted to 310 262 million BGN, as the largest share had the ‘Industry’ sector - 36.9%.

The non-financial enterprises reported a positive financial result of 38 843 million BGN.

2. Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing

At NSI 47 295 enterprises in the ‘Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing’ sector submitted annual reports on their activity for 2024, or 10.0% of the total number of the reported non-financial enterprises.

These enterprises employed 105 688 persons who generated a value of output of 11 720 million BGN at current prices.

A positive financial result of 1 226 million BGN was reported, as 83.1% of the enterprises finished 2024 with profit, 9.4% - with loss and 7.5% - with zero financial results.

3. Industry

Annual reports on their activities were submitted to NSI by 37 072 industrial enterprises, or 7.9% of the total number of the reported non-financial enterprises at NSI, as the largest share had the ‘Manufacturing’ sector - 81.1%.

The value of output at current prices, manufactured by the industrial sector amounted to 114 677 million BGN, which formed 36.9% of the total production value of non-financial enterprises.

This sector employed 550 829 persons, or 24.6% of the total number of persons employed in the non-financial enterprises.

The industrial enterprises finished 2024 with a positive financial result of 8 755 million BGN at current prices. The largest contribution had the ‘Manufacturing’ sector, which formed 80.2% of that result.

4. Construction

At NSI 26 702 construction enterprises submitted annual reports on their activity, or 5.7% of the total number of reported non-financial enterprises. The largest share had the enterprises engaged in specialized construction activities - 54.0% (Fig. 7).

The construction enterprises employed 155 828 persons, or 7.0% of the total number of persons employed in the non-financial enterprises.

The construction sector generated a value of output of 33 174 million BGN at current prices, or 10.7% of the total production value of the non-financial enterprises.

The construction sector finished 2024 with a positive financial result of 3 408 million BGN at current prices and ‘Construction of buildings’ formed 33.9% of that result.

5. Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

Annual reports on their activity for 2024 were submitted at NSI by 138 545 trade enterprises, or 29.4% of the total number of reported non-financial enterprises. The largest share had ‘Retail trade, except motor vehicles and motorcycles’ - 67.7% (Fig. 10).

This sector engaged 499 558 persons, or 22.4% of the total number of persons employed in the non-financial enterprises.

The trade sector generated a value of output of 44 329 million BGN at current prices, or 14.3% of the total production value of the non-financial enterprises.

The trade enterprises realized a positive financial result of 9 515 million BGN at current prices and ‘Wholesale trade, except motor vehicles and motorcycles’ formed 63.4% of that result.

6. Services

At NSI 221 371 enterprises in the service sector submitted their annual reports, or 47.0% of the total number of the reported non-financial enterprises.

This sector employed 922 132 persons, or 41.3% of the total number of persons employed in the non-financial enterprises.

At current prices, in the service sector was generated value of output of 106 362 million BGN that formed 34.3% of the total production value of the non-financial enterprises.

The service sector finished 2024 with a positive financial result of 15 939 million BGN and 23.2% of that result were realized by ‘Information and communication’.

Methodological notes

Coverage - all sections by NACE Rev. 2 with the exception of ‘Financial and insurance activities’, ‘Public administration and defence, compulsory social security’, ‘Activities of membership organisations’ and ‘Activities of households’.

Number of enterprises - all non-financial enterprises, which were active during the whole or part of the reference year and have submitted their annual reports to the National Statistical Institute and/or National Revenue Agency.

Net turnover - the net value of all revenue from sales of own products, goods bought and sold in the same condition, services provided and raw materials sold. It does not include the revenue from sales of fixed assets, the income from financing, the financial and the extraordinary revenue. The value of net turnover does not include all taxes, duties or levies linked directly to revenue.

Value of output - the value of net turnover, reduced by the balance sheet of assets sold without own fixed assets. The changes in stocks of products and work in progress, the costs incurred to acquire the assets by economic means, as well as income from product- or turnover-related subsidies are also included.

Value added - the value of output, reduced by the operating expenses, excluding those for the personnel and for depreciation.

Financial result - the difference between the profit and the loss for a given aggregation level.

According to Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 of the European Parliament and of the Council on European Business Statistics and Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1197 for the reporting 2021, a change in the definitions of some of the indicators is required.
