The National Statistical Institute (NSI) informs the users of statistical information that the second issue of the ‘Statistics’ journal for 2025 has been published. The publication includes papers dedicated to the challenges of statistical recording, the international surveys and databases, the development and evaluation of statistical models in the professional sport with focus on optimizing sports results, the data virtualization, as well as a review of the historical experience of statistics in Bulgaria.

In the thematic area of ​​statistical theory and practice is published the study ‘Perspectives and challenges for the statistical reporting of crypto-assets’ (S. Kolev) which analyses the specific features and methodological difficulties in the statistical reporting of crypto-assets.

The ‘Statistical Research and Data Analysis’ section includes three papers. In the article ‘Housing and building stock census in Bulgaria in 1985’ (S. Zlatanova) the housing stock censuses are considered as statistical surveys that provide information on the number and structure of dwellings and create prerequisites for a comprehensive assessment of the housing conditions and material life of the population. The article ‘Review of international surveys and databases on attitudes and practices related to paid childcare leaves’ (E. Dimitrova) contains a systematized overview of major international socio-demographic surveys and information on the paid childcare leave. The third article – ‘A statistical model for speed normalisation under variable terrain and snow conditions in cross-country skiing’ (D. Mitsov) – presents a pilot study focused on developing and evaluating a statistical model for speed normalisation in cross-country skiing measured using GPS data, by correcting for snow glide and terrain slope, thereby obtaining a unified metric of equivalent flat speed.

The ‘Business Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence’ section includes the article ‘Data virtualization as an approach for modernizing the information infrastructure of NSI’ (T. Stefanova), which examines data virtualization as a strategic direction for modernizing the information infrastructure of the National Statistical Institute.

In the section ‘Statistics for Everyone’ are published essays by students from grades IX to XII – the winners from the Statistical essay competition (2025) on the topic ‘Opportunities for creating official statistics by using data from private companies’. The competition is organized annually by NSI and is focused on developing argumentation skills, critical thinking and learning good practices in interpreting and using statistical information.

The first edition of ‘Statistics’ journal for 2025 combines publications reflecting both the historical experience of the Bulgarian statistics and the modern challenges to be faced by the European and the national statistical practice. The content of the edition is structured in three fields: development of modern statistical theory and practice, statistical research and data analysis and business intelligent systems and artificial intelligence.

In the field of statistical theory and practice is published the research ‘Development of the European legal framework in the field of statistics’ by R. Antonov, which traces the evolution of the legal framework in the field of statistics – from the first steps of the integration to the latest amendments of Regulation (EC) No 223/2009.

The ‘Statistical Research and Data Analysis’ section includes two researches. The first (‘Representative surveys during the Population and housing census of December 4, 1985’, S. Zlatanova) analyses the results from empirical studies broadening the possibilities to study the demographic and social processes. The second one (‘Guidelines for management of the statistical process in the field of environmental statistics. Approach of NSI for integrated methodological framework’, G. Cheshmedjieva) presents an institutional model for integrated management of the statistical processes in the ‘environment’ thematic area. In the ‘Business Intelligent Systems and Artificial Intelligence’ section is presented a methodology for integration of data from web into official statistics through the ‘Integrating web data into official statistics: the ‘Trusted Smart Statistics (TSS) – Web Intelligence Network (WIN)’ project (M. Angelova, K. Georgiev).  The research outlines new opportunities for usage of data from web in the production of reliable statistical information.
