Population and Demographic Processes in 2023

As of December 31, 2023, the population of Bulgaria is 6 445 481 persons. Compared to 2022, the country’s population decreased by 2 229 persons or by 0.03%. There are 57 478 children born in 2023, of which 57 197 (99.5%) - live born. The number of live births increased by 601 children, or 1.1% compared to the previous year. The number of deaths in 2023 is 101 006 and compared to the previous year, decreased by 17 808, or by 15.0%.

Updated population projection up to 2090

Demographic projections (population perspective projections) are calculations done under settled in advance conditions for the future development of fertility, mortality and migration. They give an idea of population development during the projected period. The projections concern the development of the population up to 2090, taking into account the number of the population, the number of live births and deaths, and the number of immigrants and emigrants. The population is distributed by sex and age for each year of the period. Three different scenarios for the population projections are used, depending on the expected social-economic development of the country. The first variant is defined as realistic and prepared according to the EU’s regulations on the demographic and socio-economic development of Member States. Population and Demographic Processes in 2022

According to the Demography statistics, the population of the country as of the end of 2022 is 6 447 710 persons. Compared to the previous year, it has decreased by 34 774 persons, or by 0.5%. There are 56 596 live born children in 2022. The number of live births decreases by 2 082 compared to the previous year. The number of deaths in 2022 is 118 814, and the crude mortality rate - 18.4‰. Compared to the previous year, the number of deaths decreases by 30 181.

The absolute number and the relative share of women with two children are the highest - 1 353 thousand (44.6%). 204 000 or 6.7% of women have three children each, and this share is twice as high in rural as in urban areas - 11.3 and 5.1%, respectively. 78 000 or 2.6% of women have four or more children. A little more than a fifth of women - 650 thousand (21.4%) do not have children at the critical moment of the census. The average number of live births per woman aged 12 and over is 1.47. This indicator is higher in rural (1.75) than in urban areas (1.37).

Business demography statistics present data on the active population of enterprises, enterprise births, enterprise survivals (followed up to five years after birth), enterprise deaths, and high-growth enterprises. The term business demography is used to cover a set of variables which explain the characteristics and demography of the business population. For each business demographic event, NACE Rev.2 activity, employment and legal form are available.

Population and Demographic Processes in 2021

According to Demography statistics data population of the country as of the end of the 2021 the population is 6 838 937 persons. Compared to the previous year it has decreased by 77 611 persons or by 1.1%. There are 58 678 live born children in 2021. The number of live births decreases by 408 compared to the previous year. The number of deaths in 2021 is 148 995 and the crude mortality rate - 21.7‰. Compared to the previous year the number of deaths increases by 24 260.

Nearly quarter of country population counted online

The greatest part of counted dwellings is in Sofia (37.8%), Varna (22.0%) and Plovdiv (19.2%).  After them is Ruse where 18.3 of the dwellings are counted. Up to now the questionnaire about survey of migration attitudes has been filled in by 1 762 persons throughout the country. 790 persons answered the questionnaire about the reproductive behaviour. The surveys about the births and reproductive attitudes, as well as about the migration and migration behaviour are sample ones and are carried out parallelly with the census. Almost 44 000 randomly selected households throughout the country can fill in one of the two questionnaires.
