Population and Demographic processes

As of December 31, 2024, the population of Bulgaria was 6 437 360 persons. Compared to 2023, the country’s population had decreased by 8 121 persons, or by 0.13%. There were 53 727 children born in 2024, of which 53 428 (99.4%) - live-born. The number of live births decreased by 3 769 children, or 6.6% compared to the previous year. The number of deaths in 2024 was 100 736 and the crude mortality rate - 15.6‰. Compared to the previous year, the number of deaths had decreased by 270, or by 0.3%.

Population and Demographic Processes in 2023

As of December 31, 2023, the population of Bulgaria is 6 445 481 persons. Compared to 2022, the country’s population decreased by 2 229 persons or by 0.03%. There are 57 478 children born in 2023, of which 57 197 (99.5%) - live born. The number of live births increased by 601 children, or 1.1% compared to the previous year. The number of deaths in 2023 is 101 006 and compared to the previous year, decreased by 17 808, or by 15.0%.

Updated population projection up to 2090

Demographic projections (population perspective projections) are calculations done under settled in advance conditions for the future development of fertility, mortality and migration. They give an idea of population development during the projected period. The projections concern the development of the population up to 2090, taking into account the number of the population, the number of live births and deaths, and the number of immigrants and emigrants. The population is distributed by sex and age for each year of the period. Three different scenarios for the population projections are used, depending on the expected social-economic development of the country. The first variant is defined as realistic and prepared according to the EU’s regulations on the demographic and socio-economic development of Member States.
