Project ‘Climate change-related statistics: Energy efficiency and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from buildings’

In July 2026, the National Statistical Institute started work on the project ‘Climate Change Statistics: Energy Efficiency and Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Buildings’, under Grant Agreement with the European Commission No 101262171 - 2025-BG-SUSTAINABILITY.

The project is being developed in the context of the European Commission’s drive to make Europe more resilient, more competitive and better prepared for climate change. This determines the need for high-quality statistics to monitor progress and support decision-making on relevant actions. Producing statistics on climate change adaptation and mitigation is a central priority of the European Commission. The building stock is crucial for achieving the European Union’s energy and climate goals.

The overall objective of the project is to integrate new data sources of information in the production of official statistics and to produce new datasets linking the energy performance of buildings with geospatial data. Statistical datasets and maps for existing buildings will be developed with a main focus on their energy performance, including energy performance certificates, primary energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

The project will result in the development of a methodology for integrating and geolocating existing datasets, as well as geospatial and attribute models for integration and GIS mapping at regional and city level. National-level maps of buildings grouped by their energy performance will be produced.

The duration of the project is 18 months, and it is expected to end in December 2027.
