Trips of Bulgarian residents abroad and arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria - August 2026 - preliminary data

In August 2026, the number of trips of Bulgarian residents abroad was 1 116.2 thousand (Annex, Table 1), or 3.5% more than in August 2025 (Figure 1). An increase in the number of trips with all observed purposes was registered.

Most trips of Bulgarian residents were made to: Greece - 321.6 thousand, Türkiye - 288.5 thousand, Romania - 78.9 thousand, Serbia - 72.4 thousand, Germany - 67.3 thousand, Italy - 39.7 thousand, France  - 29.8 thousand, Austria - 29.5 thousand, Republic of North Macedonia - 27.9 thousand, Spain - 24.2 thousand (Figure 2).

The trips for holiday and recreation purposes formed the greatest share of the total number of trips of Bulgarian residents abroad - 56.0%, followed by those with other purposes - 32.5%, and with professional purposes - 11.5% (Figure 3).

In August 2026, the number of visits by non-residents to Bulgaria was 2 221.2 thousand (Annex, Table 2), or 2.1% less in comparison with the same month of the previous year (Figure 4). A decrease of 5.5% was registered in trips for professional purposes and 3.9% - for holiday and recreation purposes, while those with other purposes increased by 0.5%. Transit passes through the country accounted for 37.8% (840.6 thousand) of all visits of non-residents to Bulgaria.

The share of visits by EU citizens was 58.9% of the total number of non-residents‘ visits to Bulgaria and reached 1 307.3 thousand, the largest being by visitors from Romania - 32.1%.

The visits of non-residents in the group ‘Other European countries’^[1] were 741.4 thousand, or 33.4% of all visits to Bulgaria. The highest registered number of visits was from Türkiye - 346.5 thousand, or 46.7% in this group.

Most visits to Bulgaria were from: Romania - 419.2 thousand, Türkiye - 346.5 thousand, Germany - 212.4 thousand, Ukraine - 174.6 thousand, Poland - 111.6 thousand, Serbia - 99.9 thousand, Greece - 81.6 thousand, Czechia - 73.4 thousand, Netherlands - 72.6 thousand, France - 67.9 thousand (Figure 5).

The predominant share of the visits was for holiday and recreation purposes - 51.9%, followed by trips for other purposes - 43.2%, and for professional purposes - 4.9% (Figure 6).

Methodological notes

The definitions recommended by the World Tourism Organisation and the Methodological Manual for tourism by Eurostat are applied by the National Statistical Institute.

In accordance with these definitions, an international tourist is any person who travels to a country other than his/her permanent residence for less than a year and whose main purpose is not doing any activity for payment in the place visited.

The purposes of visiting a country are the following:

• Excursion and holiday;
• Professional purposes (business trips, participation in conferences, congresses, concluding deals, etc.);
• Other (as a guest, education and visiting cultural and sports events, etc.) purposes.

Statistical data on the trips of Bulgarian residents travelling abroad and visits by non-residents to Bulgaria are obtained on the basis of monthly information received from the Ministry of Interior, the airport authorities and a sample survey of the National Statistical Institute among residents and non-residents passing through border checkpoints.
