The Committee on Monetary, Financial and Balance of Payments Statistics was established with a Decision of the Council of the European Communities from 1991 with the aim of assisting the European Commission in drawing up and implementing the multiannual programme of work relating to monetary, financial and balance of payments statistics. The Committee has the task of expressing opinions on the development of statistics in various directions, necessary for policies, implemented by the Council, the Commission, the European System of Central Bank (ESCB) and the various committees assisting them.

In its main role, the Committee is a forum for coordination of statistical policies between the National Statistical Institutes and Eurostat, on the one hand, and National Central Banks and the European Central Bank, on the other. It convenes twice a year and its participants are representatives of the European Central Bank and Eurostat, as well as representatives of the Central Banks and National Statistical Institutes of EU member states.

The Executive Body of the Committee is comprised of 12 members and for the 2027-2028 mandate it includes representatives of Eurostat, the European Central Bank, as well as of the Central Banks of Slovenia, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria, and the National Statistical Institutes of Bulgaria, Denmark and Portugal.

The meeting of the Executive Body, where the mandate will be passed from the old to the new members will take place on 23 and 24 November 2026 in Rome, Italy.
