The President of the NSI was elected as a member of the Bureau of the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy

The President of the NSI, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, PhD, was elected as a member of the Bureau of the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy (CSSP) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for 2026. This was done after a nomination and election procedure according to the Rules of Procedure of the OECD.

The election of Assoc. Prof. Atanasov is a signification recognition, as no other OECD candidate country has had a representative in the Bureau of the CSSP to date. The remaining members of the Bureau with a 2026 mandate are the Presidents of the Statistical Offices of Norway (Chair of the Bureau), Netherlands (Vice-chair), Australia, Canada, Estonia, Mexico and Eurostat.

The members of the Bureau of the CSSP are elected in their personal capacity on the basis of their respective qualifications and professional achievements, with the goal of directing the work of the CSSP effectively and impartially. Regional and gender balance is taken into account when electing the members of the Bureau.

The main mandate of the CSSP is to provide high-quality and internationally comparable statistical information and to promote the use of reliable statistical data in the process of developing economic and social policies.

We would like to note, that Bulgaria has been an associate member of the CSSP since 2018. Bulgarian statistics received a very high assessment after two successfully conducted on-site missions at the NSI by representatives of the Organisation in 2023 and 2024 and an official hearing of the Bulgarian delegation during the 21st meeting of the CSSP in June 2024 at the OECD headquarters in Paris, France. After the hearing of the Bulgarian delegation, the NSI was informed of the successful conclusion of Bulgaria’s accession review to the CSSP.

This achievement is yet another recognition of the quality, impartiality and objectivity of Bulgarian statistics, both at the European and International level.
