Programme of Population and Housing Fund Census in the Republic of Bulgaria in 2011 - Adopted by Protocol № 24/p. 1 of 23.06.2010 of the Council of Ministers.
Awareness and Media Campaign - a Key Factor for the Success of Census 2011 (in English) - author Mariana Kotzeva, Ph.D. Associate Professor, President of the NSI up to 20.03.2012.
On 1st February 2011 Bulgaria conducted seventeenth Population and Housing Census in its modern history. Data collection took place in two stages. From 1st to 9th of February 2011 for the first time Bulgarian population was offered the opportunity to fill in census questionnaire via internet. In the last three weeks of February (from 10th till 28th of February 2011) the interviewers visited households to conduct face-to-face interviews with those who had not used the internet option.
The Census was an overall success. It is well recognized in the country that Census 2011 appeared to be the largest population mobilization in recent Bulgarian history, a period of full support to the survey by all stakeholders – government, local authorities, media, citizens and communities, a time of active NSI presence reflected in a positive manner by media. A key factor for the successful preparation and implementation of the Census was the nationwide, well targeted and comprehensive integrated public communications campaign.
The Census 2011 public communications campaign was one of the most extensive and far reaching marketing campaigns ever conducted in Bulgaria. Census is a complex exercise and the final outcome depends strongly on the population participation rate. Therefore the campaign attempted to motivate each person to take part in it and to make her feeling like she is a crucial part of Census. For a very limited time frame our marketing activities reached 3 millions of households.

II. In Statistical surveys and analysis, the following articles are included:
2011 Population Census - Main Results
The main results from carried out by NSI comprehensive national Census of the population and housing fund in 2011 in the Republic of Bulgaria are included in the publication. Indicated are statistical data about number and structures of the population by social and economic attributes, migration (in the country within the period 2001 - 2011 and abroad within the period 1980 -2011), housing fund and household facilitated.
Time Use Survey in the Period 2009 - 2010 - authors Iordan Kalchev, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Chair of Sociology at the South-West University ‘Neofit Rilski’ and Elka Iakimova, Chief expert, Demographic Statistics Division, Demographic and Social  Statistics Department at the NSI.
Within the period October 2009 - October 2010 the NSI of Bulgaria has conducted national time use survey. It describes the use of time of a separate person or the whole population for a given period (24 hours) distributed by the activities done. Data is analyzed by means of the average time (hours and minutes) spent by participants in a given activity and the share (percentage) of the participants.
Highest is the share of time spent on personal care - 12:20 hours or 33% within twenty-four-hour period, followed by activities connected to employment – 7:14 hours or 19% and study - 5:33 hours or 15% respectively. Leisure time represents about 12% of the twenty-four-hour period (4:30 hours) and the domestic work – 10%. The share of time spent on other activities is lower – voluntary work 6%, travels – 3% and others and unspecified activities 2%.
Based on data from previous time use surveys, the tendencies are described not only in average time per participant, but also changes of the structure of time within the twenty-four-hour period. It is found that time spent on sleep, employment, study and travel decrease and the leisure time and time spent on personal care – increase.
On Life Expectancy of Men and Women  - author Marta Sugareva, Ph.D. in Sociology; Professor at the University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ and the Institute for Population and Human Studies at Bulgarian Academy of Science.
Demographic interpretation is provided to the data about the dynamics of live expectancy at birth of males and females in Bulgaria registered in various historical period. In addition to this variations of the same indicator in different countries of the world are studied. This indicator is used as an integral measure for the level of mortality. The life-table data base of Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research is used. The research is concentrated on the causes for differential mortality by sex. Conclusions are drawn upon two empirically observed groups of populations (the countries of Eastern and Western Europe) with respect to the overall level of mortality (in the total population), and to difference of life expectancy by sex. Suggestions are made about the existence of two main groups of determinants for the differences by sex: 1) determinants of economic activity and employment; 2) determinants in the sphere of family.

III. In Historical development of the statistical theory and practice are presented some authentic publications of famous Bulgarian and foreign authors who have imposed significant influence on the development of the Bulgarian statistics and uplift of its international reputation:
Reproduction of the Population - author Ilia Boiadziev, published in Statistics Journal No. 6/1958.

The Library maintains an extensive exchange of books and publications with 86 international institutions (international organizations and statistical offices).
In order to apply and improve contemporary services for the users of statistical information a successful PHARE component project “Development of Library and Dissemination” was carried out. As a sustainable project result an integrated library information system was implemented with the following functionalities:
- Automated services;
- Databases built-up (electronic catalogues and digitalized library fund);
- Quick and effective searching engine for full satisfying the users needs;
- Free on-line access.
The digital library was set up in 2007. At present, the library possesses a database with over 600 000 digital pages of the Bulgarian national statistics since 1881. Collections of rare and true merit editions were scanned and preserved for the future generations.
Statistical data users have open access to the digital collections of the Library. An integral technology for management of digital data - creation, digital restoration, processing and on-line dissemination is available at the BNSI’s digital center.
The digital collections are accessible on-line free of charge on http://statlib.nsi.bg/en.
