Protected natural scenery and zones of National Ecological Network - 2024

In 2024, the area of protected natural scenery in Bulgaria amounted to 585 500 ha, or 5.3% of the country’s territory, which was 1 128 ha less than in 2023. At the end of 2024, 1 060 protected natural areas existed in Bulgaria. The biggest relative share was that of the natural parks - 43.9% (11), followed by national parks - 25.3% (3), reserves - 13.2% (55), protected areas - 13.8% (599), natural landmarks - 3.1% (352). The smallest share was that of the maintained reserves - 0.8% (35).

The protected plant species of the Bulgarian flora in 2024 were 574, and the protected animal species - 483. The number of protected venerable trees in 2024 amounted to 1 467, which was 52 more in comparison with the previous year.
