Justice and crime - International comparisons

In 2023, in Bulgaria were recorded 26 153 thefts, or 405.62 per 100 000 of the population, which placed our country 20th among the EU countries. There was a decrease of 1.8% compared to 2022.

In the same year, among the member states of the European Union (EU), the highest number of thefts per 100 000 of the population was recorded by the police authorities in Luxembourg - 3 369.81 per 100 000 people, followed by Sweden - 2 736.67, and Denmark - 2 671.50. Croatia, Slovakia and Cyprus had the lowest rates - 292.66, 217.84 and 81.76 per 100 000 people, respectively.

International comparisons are based on statistical information provided annually by the member states in the framework of a joint questionnaire of Eurostat and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UN-CTS).
