European System on Integrated Social Protection Statistics (ESSPROS) - 2024

In 2024, Bulgaria spent 40 553.6 million BGN on social protection benefits. To finance social protection in the country, 20 924.7 million BGN were allocated from the state budget, while social protection contributions amounted to 22 976.2 million BGN.

In 2024, the social protection benefits by function are:

  • “Sickness/Healthcare” - 10 909.6 million BGN;
  • “Disability” - 4 547.9 million BGN;
  • “Old age” - 17 666.8 million BGN;
  • “Survivors” - 2 385.4 million BGN;
  • “Family/Children” - 3 668.3 million BGN;
  • “Unemployment” - 765.2 million BGN;
  • “Housing” - 0.7 million BGN;
  • “Social exclusion n.e.c.” - 609.7 million BGN.

The ‘Old age’ function, with its major component expenditure for pensions, had the highest share (43.6%) in total expenditure. The ‘Sickness/Healthcare’ and ‘Disability’ functions also had a significant share of total expenditure - 26.9% and 11.2%, respectively.
