In 2023, the total value of the produced environmental goods and services by groups of environmental purposes amounted to 11 002 million BGN, which is a 2% decrease compared to 2022 (11 252 million BGN).
The largest share of production in 2023 was observed in Environmental purposes for energy from renewable sources (CEP0201): 31%, Waste management (CEP0401): 19%, Energy saving and management (CEP0202): 13%, and Air and climate protection (CEP01): 11%.
By economic activity the share of the output of the Environmental goods and services sector was highest in Energy production and water supply, sewerage and waste services (D and E): 3 650 million BGN (33%) and Mining and quarrying, manufacturing industry (B and C): 3 684 million BGN (33%). The largest increase was observed in Construction (F) - 1 054 million BGN in 2023 or 106% more than in 2022 (512 million BGN).
The contribution of the gross value added of the Environmental goods and services sector to the overall economy (to the gross domestic product - GDP) in Bulgaria was 2.2% in 2023. The value added of the environmental goods and services sector decreased from 4 492 million BGN in 2022 to 4 110 million BGN in 2023.
The employment at the Environmental goods and services sector in 2023 included 76 120 persons (expressed in full-time equivalent) or 2.2% share of the total employment in the economy. There was an increase of 4% (72 884 persons) compared to 2022.
The Environmental goods and services sector (EGSS) comprises all sectors of the economy that produce goods and services aimed at environmental protection and resource management by groups of the classification of environmental purposes (CEP). Environmental protection activities include the prevention, reduction, and removal of pollution in nature. Natural resource management activities aim to protect natural resources from depletion. The Environmental goods and services sector accounts provide data on the production of environmental goods and services and on the related employment, gross value added and exports, according to the System of Environmental Economic Accounts - Central Framework, which is an international statistical standard for measuring the environment and its relationship with the economy.
