In 2024, the total number of active employer enterprises1 was 189 338 (Figire 1), with 2 019 353 persons employed in them (Figure 2).

The largest share of employed persons was reported in sector C 'Manufacturing' - 23.2%, while the smallest share was in sector P 'Education' - 0.7% (Figure 2).
In 2024, 16 368 employer enterprises were born2, employing 43 224 persons. The highest share of employment was recorded in sector G ‘Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles’ - 26.7%, while the lowest was recorded in sector B ‘Mining and quarrying’ - 0.1%.
According to the methodology, a two-year time lag (t+2) is applied to confirm the status of presumed enterprise deaths and check for possible reactivation, which is why final data on enterprise deaths are available at a later stage. According to the final data for 2022, the number of employer enterprise deaths3 was 15 915, with a total of 45 074 persons employed in these enterprises.
2 An employer enterprise birth is a birth of an enterprise with at least one employee. This enterprise starts activity from the outset or an already existing enterprise has its first employee in the reference year.
3 An employer enterprise death occurs either as an enterprise death with at least one employee in the reference year or as an exit by decline, moving below the threshold of one employee.

Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 of European parliament and of the council of 27 November 2019 on European business statistics and Implementing Regulation No. 2020/1197 of the EC establishes the common framework for collection, coverage, production, provision and evaluation of harmonized statistics for all areas of business statistics, including the demography of EU enterprises.
The scope of the survey covers the NACE Rev. 2 sectors from B 'Mining and quarrying' to N 'Administrative and support service activities' and the sectors from P 'Education' to S 'Other service activities', excluding division 94 'Activities of membership organizations'.
