International conference on Big Data to be held in Sofia

The National Statistical Institute will host and co-organise, together with Statistics Belgium, an international conference at which the results of the ESSnet Big Data project will be presented. NSI President Sergey Tsvetarsky, Acting Director-General of Eurostat Mariana Kotzeva and project coordinator Peter Struijs will participate in the event, which will take place on 23 - 24 February 2017 in Sofia.

During the conference participants will discuss the results of the different work packages included in the current first grant agreement (SGA-I) with all European participating countries, interested experts, representatives of Eurostat, the European Commission, international organisations, the scientific community and businesses in Bulgaria.

The Director General of Statistics Netherlands Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi will deliver a keynote speech on the topic Changing gears: NSIs in the age of Big data.

The duration of SGA-I is 18 months (February 2016 - July 2017) with the involvement of a consortium of 22 partners - national statistical institutes and other statistical authorities. Statistics Netherlands is the project coordinator. Due to the scale and importance of the activities, the project is organised in seven work packages (WPs) according to the types of sources of Big Data for generating statistical data at European level.

The closing session of the seminar is expected to be dedicated to a broad discussion on the possible impact of the project results on official statistics in the short, medium and long term.

In addition, the second grant agreement (SGA-II) which will have a duration of 17 months (from January 2017 to May 2018) will be presented during the event.
