Visit of the Director-General of Eurostat

On July 6, 2015 the Director-General of Eurostat, Walter Radermacher, accompanied by the Deputy Director-General of the European institution, Mariana Kotzeva, arrived for a daylong visit at the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria.

The visit of Mr. Radermacher and Mrs. Kotzeva started with a meeting with the senior staff of the NSI and representatives of the National Statistical Council. In his speech Mr. Radermacher emphasized on the amendments to Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 on European statistics. He drew attention to the main objectives of the newly adopted Regulation: strengthening the professional independence of the National Statistical Authorities (ONAs), clarification of the coordinating role of the National Statistical Institutes (NSIs), strengthening the implementation of the European Statistics Code of Practice through the establishment of “Commitments on Confidence in Statistics”, improving access to administrative records and their use for statistical purposes.

Then the leadership of Eurostat met with the Minister of Finance, Vladislav Goranov, the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Lilyana Pavlova, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Rumiana Bachvarova, and again the focus of the discussions was the amended Regulation (EC) No 223/2009, as basic document of European statistics. The new role and place of statistics in the planning of socio-economic development and absorption of funds under the operational programmes were also discussed during the meetings.
