In May 2020, the National Statistical Institute has continued the monthly inquiry survey of the managers of accommodation establishments to gather accurate and timely information on the state and development of their businesses during the state of emergency and the ensuing epidemiological situation in the country.

Data description | Tourism Satellite Accounts is an internationally accepted statistical system description, classification and analysis of tourism expenditure. Application of this statistical system is designed to estimate all expenditure related tourist trips, made before, during and after the trips. In accordance with the methodology of Tourism Satellite Accounts includes the following expenditure at current prices for tourist trips: · expenditure of the residents in the country; · expenditure of the non-residents in the country; · expenditure of the residents abroad. |

In March 2020, in a state of emergency declared on 13.03.2020, 1 662 accommodation establishments - hotels, motels, camping sites, mountain chalets and other establishments for short-term accommodation with more than 10 bed-places were functioned in the country. The total number of the rooms in them was 51.6 thousand and the bed-places were 104.3 thousand. In comparison with March 2019, the total number of accommodation establishments (functioned during the period) decreased by 15.4% and the bed-places in them - by 10.3%.
The total number of the nights spent in all accommodation establishments registered in March 2020 was 381.0 thousand, or by 56.4% less in comparison with the same month of the previous year.
The total revenues from nights spent in March 2020 reached 21.1 million BGN or by 56.6% less compared to March 2019.

In March 2020, a decline in the trips of Bulgarian citizens abroad and the visits of foreigners to Bulgaria was registered due to the suspension of international flights and the closure of the land borders because of the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
In March 2020, the number of the trips of Bulgarian residents abroad was 230.7 thousand or by 51.8% under the registered in March 2019.
In March 2020, the number of arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria was 312.8 thousand or by 43.7% less in comparison with March 2019.

In February 2020, 1 874 accommodation establishments - hotels, motels, camping sites, mountain chalets and other establishments for short-term accommodation with more than 10 bed-places were functioned in the country. The total number of the rooms in them was 55.2 thousand and the bed-places were 112.3 thousand. In comparison with February 2019, the total number of accommodation establishments (functioned during the period) increased by 0.3% and the bed-places in them - by 0.9%.
The total number of the nights spent in all accommodation establishments registered in February 2020 was 1 053.5 thousand, or by 16.5% more in comparison with the same month of the previous year.
The total revenues from nights spent in February 2020 reached 60.9 million BGN or by 18.4% more compared to February 2019.

In February 2020, the number of the trips of Bulgarian residents abroad was 400.6 thousand or by 1.0% above the registered in February 2019. The trips with other purposes (as a guest, education and visit the cultural and sport events) in February 2020 composed the greatest share of the total number of trips of Bulgarian residents abroad - 49.2%, followed by those with professional purpose - 27.8%, and with holiday and recreation purposes - 23.0%.
In February 2020, the number of arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria was 508.0 thousand or by 5.2% more in comparison with February 2019. In February 2020, the predominant share of the visits with holiday and recreation purpose was 42.4%, followed by trips with other purposes - 38.8%, and with professional purpose - 18.8%.

In January 2020, 1 963 accommodation establishments - hotels, motels, camping sites, mountain chalets and other establishments for short-term accommodation with more than 10 bed-places were functioned in the country. The total number of the rooms in them was 57.9 thousand and the bed-places were 117.9 thousand. In comparison with January 2019, the total number of accommodation establishments (functioned during the period) increased by 4.9%, and the bed-places in them - by 3.8%.
The total number of the nights spent in all accommodation establishments registered in January 2020 was 1 066.1 thousand, or by 19.8% more in comparison with the same month of the previous year.
The total revenues from nights spent in January 2020 reached 60.8 million BGN or by 19.0% more compared to January 2019.

In January 2020, the number of the trips of Bulgarian residents abroad was 423.1 thousand or by 5.1% above the registered in January 2019. The trips with other purposes (as a guest, education and visit the cultural and sport events) in January 2020 composed the greatest share of the total number of trips of Bulgarian residents abroad - 48.0%, followed by those with holiday and recreation purposes - 27.1%, and with professional purpose - 24.9%.
In January 2020, the number of arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria was 604.6 thousand or by 9.1% more in comparison with January 2019. In January 2020, the predominant share of the visits with holiday and recreation purpose was 42.9%, followed by trips with other purposes - 40.3%, and with professional purpose - 16.8%.

In the fourth quarter of 2019, 1 302.5 thousand Bulgarian residents made tourist trips. The majority (81.1%) of them travelled only within the country, 17.1% - only abroad and 1.8% - both in the country and abroad. Compared to the same quarter of 2018 the total number of the travelled persons aged 15 and over increased by 18.9%.

The total number of the rooms in them was 58.6 thousand and the bed-places were 119.6 thousand. In comparison with December 2018, the total number of accommodation establishments (functioned during the period) increased by 1.4%, while the bed-places in them decreased by 0.2%.
The total number of the nights spent in all accommodation establishments registered in December 2019 was 905.2 thousand, or by 7.2% more in comparison with the same month of the previous year.
The total revenues from nights spent in December 2019 reached 52.3 million BGN or by 8.1% more compared to December 2018.
