Data description

The survey gathers information about the carried out investment and investment plans of the enterprises. The inquiry is conducted twice a year - in March and in October, and the questionnaires have different content. The March survey gathers information about the investment during the current year and previous two years, while the October survey - about the investment in the previous, present and next year, and the influence of definite factors on the investment over the present and next year.

The survey covers enterprises in the industrial sector.

Statistical concepts and definitions

Based on data received from March survey is calculated the expected percentage change of the investment carried out during the current year in comparison with the investment from the previous year. Based on results from October survey is calculated the percentage change of the investment carried out during the current year compared to the previous year, and also the expected investment for the next year compared to the current year.

About 3800 enterprises are surveyed

At national level: total for the territory of Republic of Bulgaria.

At European level: General for Economic and Financial affairs Directorate publishes for the EU member states, Euro area and EU candidate countries.

The time series of data are published from 2003 (at Information System INFOSTAT of the National Statistical Institute).

Individual data are not published in accordance with article 25 of the Law on Statistics. The publishing of individual data can be performed only in accordance with article 26 of the same law.

Release calendar

The date of publication of statistical information is indicated in the Release Calendar presenting the results of the statistical surveys carried out by the National Statistical Institute. The data are announced in the first two weeks after the reference period.

In order alleviate the business in submitting statistical data, reducing the respondents"  burden and improve the quality of data in statistical surveys since October 2012 "Business survey of investment activity in industry" are conducted through web-based questionnaires.

Methods of data collection:

· Through the web application and in order to reduce the degree of non-response is provided sending informational and reminder letters;

· Printed form is sent to the respondents by email or postal mail, and then they collect from RSOs that shall introduce the information in the application.

Data validation

In introducing and recording data obligatory control is performed according to set validation rules. If the information given in a questionnaire does not meet the requirements of validation are appear the error messages on user's screen. Performed and verify as regards the output data.

Data compilation

The data processing is performed by developed application software.

    In the context of state of emergency in the country in April 2020, the survey shows an increase of the pessimism in consumers’ assessments and expectations in comparison with January. The total consumer confidence indicator decreases by 17.4 percentage points compared to its level 3 months ago, which is due to the decreased confidence of both rural and urban inhabitants by 18.5 and 17.0 percentage points respectively.

    In the context of state of emergency in the country in April 2020, the NSI business surveys indicate a deterioration of business conjuncture in all observed sectors. The total business climate indicator drops by 41.7 percentage points compared to its level from the previous month, which is with 37.0 percentage points below the long-term average for the last l0 years, and with 4.4 percentage points above the long-term minimum registered in February 1997.

    The investment business inquiry of NSI carried out among industrial enterprises in March 2020 shows that in 2019 the expenditures for acquiring fixed tangible and intangible assets in industry are preserved compared to 2018. However, the plans of industrial enterprises in 2020 are for a decrease of investments by 21.8% in comparison with the previous year.

    According to the NSI business inquiries in March 2020, carried out in the period 2.03 - 18.03.2020, the total business climate indicator decreases by 3.7 percentage points in comparison with February. A reduction of the indicator is registered in industry, retail trade and service sector.

    In February 2020, the total business climate indicator decreases by 0.8 percentage points compared to the previous month as a result of the more unfavourable business climate in retail trade and service sector.
