After simultaneous control by Eurostat and NSI (which was delayed due to public holidays in Luxembourg), regarding the number of Bulgarian citizens traveling within the country and abroad in 2011, we provide the following additional information:
Monitoring of tourist trips and tourism expenditure of the population is organized on a quarterly basis under Directive 97/56 EC on data collection in the field of tourism. Quarterly data are regularly sent and published on the Eurostat website. All quarterly data is checked and verified.
Annual data on the number of trips (2,458,419), the number of overnight stays (21,166,012) and tourism expenditure (ˆ 870,919,000) is obtained as total on the basis of the results of the quarterly surveys.
Concerning the number of tourists, however, the results for the year are calculated in a different way, and represent expert assessment based on quarterly surveys.
Such an assessment is made for the first time and includes annual data for 2011. After removal of a technical error in calculating the data from the NSI, it was established that the number of tourists traveling within the country and abroad for four or more overnight stays amounted to 1,117,119 instead of 416 250 tourists in the data submitted. That explains the correction for the average expenditure of one Bulgarian tourist to be 779 euro instead of the originally published 2092 euro for all trips within the country and abroad in 2011.
Since 2012, this survey has become regular and the data will be annually published under Regulation 692/2011 of the European Parliament and the Council regarding European statistics on tourism.
In order to improve the data in the field of tourism, NSI will improve its cooperation with other institutions (Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Economy, trade organizations) as additional sources of information about the Bulgarian citizens traveling within the country and abroad.
