REGIONS, DISTRICTS AND MUNICIPALITIES IN THE REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA 2008

Published on 10.03.2010

The National Statistical Institute offers users who are interested in regional statistics the new specialized electronic publication 'Regions, Districts and Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria 2008' (on a CD).
The publication contains data about the demographic, socio-economic and environmental state of Bulgaria's regions, districts and municipalities in 2008. It is a continuation of the annual NSI's electronic publications containing regional data. The most important indicators have been chosen in order to reveal the specifics of the different territorial units. According to the Classification of Territorial Units for Statistics in Bulgaria the territory of the country is divided into two statistical zones that correspond to level NUTS – ‘North and South-East Bulgaria’ and ‘South-West and South Central Bulgaria’. They are aggregations from the 6 statistical regions that correspond to the level NUTS2 from NUTS classification. The names of statistical regions are identical to the names of the previously existing planning regions but they have different composition. The statistical regions, on their side, are aggregations from the 28 districts that correspond to the level NUTS3 from the NUTS classification. Tables are standardized to facilitate comparison between the territorial units. Stress in put on the planning regions and districts. Information about municipalities is limited. If data on municipal level are needed, publications of the 28 regional statistical offices can be used.
The published information is addressed primarily to researchers in the filed of regional development and planning. It can also be used by a wider range of users.
The publication is bilingual (Bulgarian and English) and can be useful to the participants in the EU accession process, as well as to foreign researchers.
