The National Statistical Institute presents the annual publication ‘Tourism 2008’ to users with an interest in statistical information in the field of tourism (in a printed version and on a CD). The publication is bilingual (Bulgarian/English) and contains statistical data on the development of tourism in Bulgaria. Basic statistical data for the years 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000 and the period 2006 – 2008 are included, along with methodological notes.
The data are classified into five sections:
1. International tourism
The source of information about international tourism is the Ministry of Interior where the data from the border checkpoints on the arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria and travels of Bulgarians residents abroad are processed. After accession the European union in 2007 and the implementation of the Regulation 562/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the rules governing the movement of persons across borders the data on arrivals from Member states are estimated by different statistical methods. This section includes data about number of foreigners’ visits to Bulgaria by country of origin, by months, purpose of visit and by mode of transport as well as travels of Bulgarian residents abroad by country of destinations, by months and by purpose of visit.
2. Tourism total for Bulgaria
The sources of data are statistical surveys on accommodations establishments. This section includes data about accommodation establishments by type (hotels; mountain chalets; camping sites and other accommodation establishments), nights spent by Bulgarians and foreigners by categories of the establishments and by months, arrivals of Bulgarians and foreigners in accommodation establishments by categories of the establishments and by months, arrivals of foreigners by country of origint.
3. Tourism by districts
The section contains data about activity of accommodation establishments during 2008 by districts.
4. Tourism by resorts
Resorts with national importance defined by decision ¹ 45 of the Council of Ministers (Official Gazette ¹ 11/01.02.2005) are included in the section by resorts. The source of data is statistical survey on accommodations. This section includes data about accommodation establishments by resorts, nights spent by Bulgarians and foreigners by categories of the establishments, arrivals of Bulgarians and foreigners in accommodation establishments by resorts.
5. Tourist trips of the Bulgarians
The source of information is a sample survey carried out in the non-institutional households in the country. This section includes data on the number of private and business trips in the country and abroad; reasons for the private trips; organization of the trips; the mode of used transport; number of nights spent by type of accommodation establishments in the country and abroad and related expenditures for nights spent, foots, transport, leisure and others.
The National Statistical Institute also offers to users of statistical information electronic version of the publication (on CD).
